In the case of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland occurs, leading to an obstruction of urine flow through the urethra. This enlargement develops gradually as prostate cells multiply and apply pressure on the urethra, which is responsible for the elimination of urine and semen. The narrowing of the urethra due to the enlarged prostate requires the bladder to contract with increased force in order to expel urine. Consequently, the muscles of the bladder adapt over time, becoming stronger, thicker, and more sensitive. This can result in a frequent urge to urinate, even when the bladder contains only a small amount of urine. Ultimately, as the bladder muscles struggle to overcome the narrowing of the urethra, incomplete emptying of the bladder and urine retention may occur. It is important to understand the impact of BPH on urinary function and the associated symptoms.
